History of Alco FA1 and FB1

ALCO FA Diesel Locomotive 1500 hp

The ALCO FA was a family of diesel locomotives designed to haul freight trains. F series was introduced by the company in 1946 and initially offered 1,500 horsepower with a B-B wheel arrangement (four axles per truck). The locomotives were built by a partnership of ALCO and General Electric. They were of a cab unit design, and both cab-equipped lead (A unit) FA and cabless booster (B unit) FB models were built. ALCO's designation of F marks these locomotives as being geared primarily for freight use but many were used with passenger trains.

Production ran from January 1946 to May 1959 with a total number built of approximately 1,000. Rock Island purchased 16 FA units and 8 FB units in 1948. Several examples of FAs and FBs have been preserved in railroad museums, a few of them in operational status on such lines as the Grand Canyon Railway and the Napa Valley Wine Train.
