At its height in the early 1990s, Churchill Truck Lines was one of the 50 largest trucking companies in the U.S., hauling freight in 26 Midwestern states.
Cliff Churchill started the company in Chillicothe, Missouri, in 1926. It grew to have more than 100 terminals and several hundred employees.
After 68 years in business, the company closed in 1994.
Chillicothe had a significant history as a transportation hub. at the founding of the Churchill truck lines, there were several major railroads serving Chillicothe including the predecessors of BNSF; Wabash and The Hannibal and St Joseph Railroads. Highways 36 and 65 meet at Chillicothe. That is where Churchills Freight terminal and headquarters were located.
